Deaths in 2009

1.      The greatest musician in the world, Sarod maestro Ali Akbar Khan died.
2.      Padmabhusan awardee Tyeb Mehta, one of India's leading artists, died following a heart attack.
3.      Renowned playwright and theatre director Habib Tanvir died at the age of 85.
4.      Kamala Surayya Das recently passed away. She was a noted short story writer of which language?Malayalam.
5.      Eminent Playwright and Gubbi Veeranna award winner H N Hugar died.
6.      Millvina Dean(97), the last remaining survivor of the sinking of the Titanic, died at a care home in England. Dean was a 2-month old baby when Titanic sank after hitting an iceberg in Atlantic Ocean on its 1912.
7.      Charles Donald Albury, co-pilot of the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan, died at the age of 88.
8.      Carnatic musician and composer S.Rajaram passed away.
9.      Television News Legend Walter Cronkite (US) passes away at the age of 92.
10. World's oldest and one of the last surviving World War I veterans, Henry Allingham (London), died at the age 113.
11. Former Rajasthan chief minister and Assam governor, Shiv Charan Mathur, 83, passed away.
12. Veteran Marathi actor Nilu Phule passes away.
13. Carnatic vocalist Pattammal passes away.
14. Renowed Hindustani classical vocalist Gangubai hangal passed away.
15. Veteran Hindi film actress Leela Naidu dies.
16. Charismatic former royal Rajmata Gayatri Devi, who had an eventful stint in politics and was jailed during Emergency, died in Jaipur.
17. Senior Congress leader and Gujarat governor-designate, Devendra Nath Dwivedi passed away at the age 74.He was recently appointed as the new Governor of Gujarat.
