November Current Affairs 2009 - Part 1

Ø  Jamait-e-Ulema Hind or the JEU on November 3rd issued a fatwa against singing national song 'Vande Mataram'. According to a resolution, Muslims should not sing 'Vande Mataram' as its reciting is against the Islam. 
Ø  The 2009 Asian Indoor Games were held in Vietnam. India has won 40 medals (6-Gold, 9-Silver, and 25-Bronze) and stood at 7th Place. While China stood at first place with 92 medals (48-Gold, 25-Silver, and 19- Bronze).
Ø  China plans to operationalise its fourth civilian airport in Tibet in Ngari Prefecture, close to India, next year(2010) as part of the efforts to boost infrastructure facilities in the strategic Himalayan region.The Gunsa Airport in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region is expected to start operation on July 1, 2010, to become the fourth civil airport on the "Roof of the World”.
Ø  The West Bengal government finalized a deal for acquiring 6000 acre land from farmers for reconstruction of embankments in the Sundarbans in South 24 and North 24 Parganas districts breached by Cyclone 'Aila'.
Ø  The Centre has released over Rs 300 crore to West Bengal for conservation of tigers in Sunderban and Buxa sanctuaries of the state.
Ø  Jamshedpur had the highest per capita carbon emission while Thiruvananthapuram and Asansol had the lowest in 2007-08, according to an energy status report of 40 Indian cities.
Ø  The MSP of wheat has been fixed at Rs 1,100 per quintal, marking an increase of Rs 20 per quintal over the last year's MSP (1080).
Ø  India, which is home to highest number of diabetics in the world, will have around 51 million patients of the disease by 2010 and that figure may go up to 80 million by 2030.
Ø  D R Meena, an Indian Legal Service officer, was appointed as the new Law Secretary. He replaces T K Viswanathan who retired on October 31. Viswanathan, meanwhile, has taken over as adviser to Law Minister M Veerappa Moily. The post of adviser was recently approved by the union cabinet to help the government push legal and judicial reforms.
Ø  Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily(for his book Shri Ramayan Mahaniveshanam, which is considered as the best Ramayana in Kannada after Kuvempu’s.) and Krishna Bihari Mishra(for Kalpataru ke Utsav Leela) will be conferred with the coveted Moortidevi Award constituted by the Bharatiya Jnanpith Committee. Moily gets the 21st edition(2007), while Mishra gets the 20th edition(2006).
Ø  Cambodia has appointed the ousted prime minister of neighbouring Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra, as a government adviser on the economy.
Ø  Former US vice president Al Gore, who has campaigned relentlessly on green issues, is on track to become the world's first "carbon billionaire" amid claims of profiting from the climate change agenda.
Ø  Indian batting icon Sachin Tendulkar became the first player in the history of the cricket to cross the 17,000 run mark in ODI’s.
Ø  The government has appointed senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Durgesh Shankar as a member of the Central Board of Direct Taxes replacing Saroj Bala.
Ø  Fiji's acting president Ratu Epeli Nailatikau was sworn in as head of state of the military-ruled Pacific nation. Nailatikau, a former army commander credited with guiding self-appointed Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama through his military career, was appointed as acting president after Ratu Josefa Iloilo retired at the end of July 2009.
